ROBERT POLHILL BEVAN
1865-1925
Painter. Born in Hove, Sussex. He studied at the Westminster School of Art and the Académie Julian, Paris. In 1894 he met Gauguin in Pont Aven, Brittany. In the company of Eric Forbes-Robert, J.H.Donaldson and Roderic O’Conor , his style of landscape drawing was very much influenced by the circle around Gauguin. On his return to England, due to his interest in horses, they began to play a major role in his art. In 1897 he married the polish painter Stanislawa de Karlowska and visited Poland several times with her, staying for long periods. Peasant life, dwellings, costume and farming provided him with subjects to draw. In 1905 he had his first solo show in the Baillie Gallery. He became a founder member of the Camden Town Group in 1911. From 1912 he took to spending summer holidays in the Blackdown Hills on the Devon/Somerset borders, first staying with members of the Camden Group. He eventually bought a cottage at Luppitt. His subjects were local farms and farm life. Whilst staying in London, his love of horses drew him to Cabyards and horse sale venues at the Barbican close to where he lived . In 1913 he joined the London Group and in 1915 the Cumberland Market Group, he was also member of the New English Art Club.
