CAMERON, David Young
DAVID YOUNG CAMERON Scottish 1865 - 1945
A prominent Scottish-born painter, etcher and drypoint artist of landscapes and architectural views. Cameron attended evening school at the Glasgow School of Art and in 1885 attended the Edinburgh School of Art, joining the now extinct Scottish Atelier Society. After meeting George Stevenson, a friend of Seymour Haden, Cameron took up etching. His earliest etchings date from 1887 and Stevenson helped him with some of his early etched plates. In 1889 he was elected an Associate of the Royal Society of Painter-Etchers, with whom from 1888-1902 he regularly exhibited at the annual exhibitions. In 1902 with William Strang he resigned. By 1911 he had become a member to the Royal Academy, the Royal Society of Painters and Watercolourists( as he still regularly painted and did not restrict himself to etching only), Royal Scottish Academy, International Society, Royal Scottish Society of Painters, Society of Twelve, Berlin and Munich Secessionists. His early etchings featured his home city, Glasgow and included the famous ‘Clyde set,’ 20 views of the River Clyde. He visited France and Italy ‘Etchings in North Italy’, 1895, ‘26 views of North Italy,’ and made architectural study etchings of various continental cities. On his return to Scotland he concentrated on capturing the spirit of Scottish rural landscapes rather than on figurative work. He produced over 500 etchings and enjoyed great popularity in the 1920’s and 1930’s when he was able to command high prices for his work. Exhibitions Grolier Club, New York. 1908 Royal Academy Royal Society of Painters and Watercolours. Royal Scottish Academy, International Society, Royal Scottish Society of Painters, Society of Twelve, Berlin and Munich Secessionists.
