EVANS, Merlyn.
MERLYN EVANS British,1910-1973
Born in Cardiff, of Welsh parents, but brought up in Scotland. Attended Glasgow School of Art (1927-30) where Evans was introduced to zinc engraving by Charles Murray who had won the Rome Scholarship in 1925 and ahd returned to Glasgow two years later. In 1931 he won a place at the Royal College and also the Haldane Travelling Scholarship making it possible for him to visit Berlin, Copenhagen and Paris. After a post graduate course at the Royal College (1932-34), Evans began teaching art in Wilson’s Grammar School, a stones throw from Camberwell School of Art and Crafts (1934-36) Frequent visits to Paris where he met Mondrian, Hayter, Giacometti and Ernst. He later taught at the Reimann School which was staffed by ex-members of the Bauhaus. He later moved (1938) to Durban, South Africa where he took a post as a visiting teacher. Through out the thirties, Evans was influenced by the Surrealists and Vorticists. During his military service he was stationed in North Africa and Italy. On his return, finding that most of his work had been destroyed by enemy bombing, he took a refresher course at The Central School of and Art and Crafts. It was here under a former pupil of Frank Short, W.P.Robbins, that he was taught copper aquatint and mezzotint engraving. On visiting the Atelier Lacouriere in Paris, he was taught colour engraving under Frelaut, using aquatint plates. In 1958 his ‘Vertical Suite in Black’, a collection of six etchings was published by St.George’s Gallery.
