FREDERICK LANDSEER MAUR GRIGGS British, 1876-1938
Griggs was a printmaker who's first job was making perspective drawings for local architects.Born in Hitchen, Hertfordshire in 1876, he began working for Macmillans the publishers on the ‘Highways and Byways’ series in 1900-there were 13 illustrated books altogether. In 1903 he moved to Chipping Camden, Gloustershire. Griggs took up etching in 1912 and had his first exhibition at the XXI Gallery in 1915. In 1921 Colnaghi’s became his publishers. He produced fifty-seven prints and was very successful until the depression, which affected the art market. He died in relative poverty. He also designed lettering, typefaces and book covers. His work reflects his love of architecture and most are imaginary scenes. He was a member of the ARA (1922), the Royal Academy (1931) and also the Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings. Old stone architecture seemed to inspire all his work.
