HRDLICKA, Alfred
HRDLICKA, Alfred (Austrian 1928-) Born in Vienna in 1928 he later became a sculptor, etcher, and commercial artist. Between 1947-57 he studied at the Akademie der Bildenden Kunste in Vienna. He studied painting and etching under A.P.Guetersloh and J.Dobrowsky, but later studied sculpture with Wotruba. He had his first exhibition in the Viennese Zedlitzhalle in 1960. Although most contemporary artists were experimenting with abstract painting, Hrdlicka concentrated on figurative expressionism style with political and social overtones. In 1964 he represented Austria in the Biennale in Venice. He taught in Stuttgart (1971-73, 1975-86); in Hamburg at the National University of Arts (1973-75); in Berlin at the University of Arts (1986-89) and Vienna from 1989 at the University of Applied Arts. Hrdlicka designed the anti war and Fascist memorial which stands in Albertinaplatz, Vienna in 1988-91. In 2001 he designed the set for ‘Ring der Nibelungen’ at the Theatre Meiningen, Meiningen.
