HUTTON, Clarke
Clarke Hutton 1898-1984 Book illustrator, artist and teacher. Hutton was born in London, and early in his life worked in stage design before deciding to become an artist. He attended the Central School of Arts and Crafts (1927-30) He studied under A S Hartrick's, a lithographer, a class he took over when Hartrick retired. He taught lithography from 1930-68, it would appear he stopped when he retired himself. Hutton started book illustration around 1930 and was well placed after the war when many publishers such as the Curwen Press and Baynard Press, who were using lithography as a form of reproduction. He illustrated many children’s books and later illustrated private press books throughout his career. In his retirement he took up painting. There was an exhibition of his abstract work at the Neville gallery in Canterbury in the early 1990’s.
