OurFeatured Artist this month is this month is Philip Sutton. Painter and a printer, Philip Sutton. Born in 1928, Sutton studied under William Coldstream at the Slade School of Fine Art. On his return to England, after completing his traveling Scholarship, Sutton taught at the Slade School of Fine Art, staying there until 1963.
Sutton’s first one-man show was held at Roland, Browse and Delbanco in 1956, the same year that he was elected a Member of the London Group. Other solo exhibitions included the Geoffrye Museum, London in 1959; 'Retrospective', at Leeds City Art Gallery in 1960; exhibitions in Newcastle, Bradford and Edinburgh in 1961 and at the Graves Art Gallery, Sheffield in 1971. In 1963 he went to Australia and Fiji, returning the following year with a large exhibition of tropical landscapes. The two prints that I have for sale are from this period.Both are from a series of eight that he did, all of which were printed by the Curwen press. These can bee seen on the Tate Gallery website.
Philip Sutton lives and works in Pembrokeshire, Wales.
